The DJ Kenn / Chief Keef story is one of those “Hollywood Needs to Make this into a Movie stories”

The DJ Kenn / Chief Keef story is one of those “Hollywood Needs to Make this into a Movie stories”. A Japanese teenager, originally from the Yamagata Prefecture of Japan comes to the US, ends up in Chicago speaking very little English and not knowing a single soul in the city, just knowing he wants to make rap music. A Good Samaritan who turns out to be 11 year old fledgling rapper Chief Keef’s uncle finds the Japanese tourist walking down the street in Woodlawn (a 98% black neighborhood) and immediately takes him in, gives him a place to stay. Kenn sets up a recording studio in the apartment and begins recording local rappers including Keef. Everyone is completely broke and struggling to survive (DJ Kenn claims to have worn the same pair of Jeans every day for a year). When their song and video for Bang goes viral Keef becomes an internet superstar nearly overnight and signs a major label deal worth 6 million dollars (followed immediately by much controversy as Chicago drowns in blood and homicide, the same shit he raps about without reservation).
It’s also a story with many gaps and unanswered questions. Why did DJ Kenn end up in the hood in Chicago, wandering around aimlessly? What happened in the 4 years between Kenn landing in Chicago and Keef blowing up? Where’s Kenn been since Keef’s rise to superstardom (Keef’s biggest hit “Don’t Like” and subsequent studio album was produced by Young Chop, who has become a star in his own right, while DJ Kenn has not been heard from in a year). It’s a story that has all the ingredients of a great film - a bizarre culture clash, overnight success from rags to riches, great music, controversy, and the immediacy of the internet. But let’s face it, movies like that dont get made anymore… or do they?

Mixtape: Lil Herb & Lil Bibby – Heir Apparents

HANEW2
“I got the best of out and y’all ain’t heard shit yet” - Beanie Sigel
The Sigel line quoted above always stuck out to me, because Beans was one of the few artists (in that day and age at least) who had ‘Best Of’ mixtapes on the street without an album in sight. Of course things are different in 2013, when the market is oversaturated with leaks, mixtapes, pre-mixtapes of mixtapes, trailers of pre-mixtape mixtapes and the like. But in my humble opinion, Bibby and Herb don’t fit into that category. But these two were in dire need of a ‘Best Of’ type of project, and like Beans “y’all ain’t heard shit yet.”
These two emcees (who rhyme together a good amount of the time) started heating up last summer, then announced their Welcome To Fazoland (Herb) and Free Crack (Bibby) mixtapes, which were both to be quarterbacked by producer DJ L. But as fall came and went, no mixtapes arrived. Then winter passed — still nothing. Now we’re kicking summer’s door down (yet again), and these two are finally putting the finishing touches on their proper debuts. Thankfully.
But over the course of the past year, these two have continuously dropped solid material. A track here a video there — they’ve always stayed in the market — we just never got the mixtapes. Well, FSD joined forces with DJ L to put together this compilation, The Best Of Herb & Bibby: Heir Apparents, featuring all of their released heat in the same place at the same damn time. Some Mp3s weren’t available, some links were dead, some were featured on other artists mixtapes — but the best of the best are all here.
Curious to know why the likes of Drake and Joey IE are tweeting about these two? Well, stream/download this refresher course below. Production is handled primarily by DJ L, but DJ Kenn and TVSH also show up to contribute. Lil Reese, Fredo Santana, King Louie, YP and Tink aid and assist on the feature tip. There are 23 heaters here for your listening pleasure. You can thank us later.

Sasha Go Bowling.
Sliced from Chicago drill mainstay Sasha Go Hard’s fantastic Round 3: The Knockout Mixtape, ‘Blow My Mind’ is a mostly successful attempt to give Toni Basil’s ‘Mickey’ chant a bit of hitta credibility. Now Chief Keef affiliate and one of Chicago’s most important producers DJ Kenn has put together a video for the track, which finds Sasha and her troupe going for strikes at the local bowling alley and rapping between frames.
It might not sound like the most obvious setting for a rap video, but that’s what makes it so perfect. [via Fake Shore Drive]

Sasha Go Hard - “Blow My Mind” [VIDEO]

Since Shady seems to have jumped out of the game at this point, Sasha has assumed her place as my favorite female rapper in Chiraq. Her first tape from 2011 was weird and great but I fear that the increased media attention (especially from mafuckas like Pitchfork) has caused her more recent work to be compromised. She had a song produced by Diplo kicking off her last shit for God’s sake. Anyway, this joint is a throwback to her experimental drill days, with Absolut P crafting a tense synth-heavy backing that’s pretty much the aural equivalent of stale bubblegum. Sasha interpolates Toni Basil’s “Mickey” and generally stunts hard in the visuals provided by the legendary DJ Kenn.

Hard to believe the last Kuchibiru Network installment came out in 2011. For part three, awesomely, the lineup is almost exactly the same, just everyone is a little more famous; Main Attrakionz, Ryan Hemsworth, Skywlkr, Silkky Johnson, Julian Wass, LWH, Gummybear, 100 and Finally Boys have all returned. In another testament to the project, where spacey and vaguely Asiatic beats softly rain like from a low-flow but high class shower head, the new additions are pretty high profile, too, including Jerome LOL and Chief Keef affiliate DJ Kenn. Download below, light some candles, etc.

New Fredo Santana Interview

FREDO SANTANA
Chicago’s rap scene has exploded in the last two years with talent and a common hunger for an alternative to the street lifestyle. One of the groups at the forefront of this movement has been Glory Boyz Entertainment, a.k.a. GBE, O-Block, OTF along with a host of other acronyms. Together they form one of the most powerful and important collectives the genre has seen to date.
At the first glance of any group member in GBE its easy to pass these youths off as troublesome and reckless, but it’s their work ethic and dedication that has allowed them to change not only their mentality but the outlook of other chicago kids looking for something else to give their lives meaning.
“Everythings starting to get new, there weren’t any real hot Chicago rappers. It aint just GBE now, there’s a lot of other rappers, producers and video directors. It’s like a big ol’ industry. I see everybody feel like they can do something with their lives. They feel like they can accomplish something. They’re lives are actually worth something.”
With a long history of drug dealing, gun charges and heavy ties to the street, Fredo initially didnt take music seriously. He would continuosly push off studio sessions with numerous excuses and typical distractions. It wasnt until he saw how serious and focused his cousin Cheif Keef was about his craft that Fredo began to see music as an alternative hustle and focus. After his most recent arrest for illegal possession of a weapon, Fredo made a promise to himself to no longer take the opportunity for granted.
“When i was in jail just recently, a lot of people was writing me. They said Keef got this song “3Hunna” and Soulja Boy just did the remix. I said man when i get out I ain’t gonna play around anymore, fuck that shit I’m going straight in… Soon as I got out I went to grab a fifth of Remy, a box of blunts and (I) went straight to Keef crib.”

Lil Durk – Molly Girl (Remix) (feat. Wiz Khalifa)

Lil Durk had quite the campaign in 2012, as he was one of the many artists out of Chicago to do it big on the national stage. One of the standout moments for Durk was his Life Ain’t No Joke  mixtape, which brought the young MC a ton of attention.
Today he drops the remix to one of the standout cuts, “Molly Girl,” with none other than Wiz Khalifa. They do not disappoint on this one, and as fans we hope to see more collaborations in the future.

Chief Keef Jailed After Probation Violation

Chief Keef was taken into custody today after a two-hour hearing in Cook County juvenile court, the Chicago Sun Times reports. Judge Carl Anthony Walker ruled that Keef had violated the terms of his 18-month probation, stemming from a December 2011 arrest for unlawful use of a weapon. Prosecutors said Keef violated his probation in June, when he visited a gun range in New York to film a since-retracted episode of Pitchfork’s Selector series. (A judge ordered Pitchfork to surrender video from the episode to prosecutors last year.) Keef will be held until a sentencing hearing, scheduled for Thursday
.

Chief Keef in Jail for Violating Probation

Chicago rapper Chief Keef was put in jail yesterday after a Cook County juvenile court judge ruled that the 17-year-old rapper had violated his probation, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Keef was sentenced to 18 months of probation last January after he was convicted of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon for pointing a gun at Chicago police officers. Although terms of his probation included requiring him to stay away from guns, Keef (real name: Keith Cozart) last summer did a video interview with Pitchfork at a New York shooting range, where he also spent 20 minutes firing a semiautomatic rifle. The video has since been taken down.
An attorney for Keef, Dennis Berkson, told the court that the rapper didn't violate the spirit of his probation in the Pitchfork interview. "Was it stupid? Yes. Did it violate the court order? No," Berkson argued, blaming Keef's record company, Interscope, for setting up the interview. The label released Chief Keef's album Finally Rich last year.
Judge Carl Anthony Walker disagreed with Berkson. "There is a clear record of a disregard for the court's authority," Walker said. He scheduled a sentencing hearing for Thursday.
